Federally mandated child support fee
As a single parent, I receive a monthly child support payment from my son’s father who has been absent for the last four years. I can imagine that many of my readers are in the same boat. I look forward to the payment and have come to rely on it.
I heard about a new “child support fee” this morning, imposed upon parents who are seeking help in collecting their child support.
The article can be read here: Single parents feel child support fee unfair
The jist of this new fee is that there will be a $25 annual fee for seeking child support. Something about this sounds a little wrong in my opinion.
As the author of the letter states, “Many single parents feel it’s penalizing the wrong people.” I have to agree with her.
While $25 isn’t a great deal of money, it’s the principle behind it that bothers me. What does everyone else think about this law?

Why is it penalizing the wrong people? It is charging for a service that was requested by the parent receiving the child support from the government. Or do you expect everything to be given free to you, just as child support money is given to you tax free, because you somehow feel that you deserve all the freebies in life? You see, if you were married to the ex, your pocked would be paying the taxes on that child support too…but somehow, once you are divorced, you feel that only the parent paying support needs to pay the taxes? Then on top of it, whether the parent paying support wants to go through the state or not, you want to take him through the ringer by going through the state and then expect him to also pay an additional 25USD for you to take him through the ringer?
Sorry, but if you can complain about 25.00USD a YEAR! that you will be missing, then I suggest you sell the computer you have and I can assure you that the money you save on internet service/electricity/computer, will MORE than make up for the 25USD that you are attempting to get out of paying.

“Or do you expect everything to be given free to you, just as child support money is given to you tax free, because you somehow feel that you deserve all the freebies in life?” As a single parent, working 40 hours a week, heading up committees for my son’s activities, and still managing to keep a clean house and a strict bedtime for my son.. I am far from expecting any freebies in life.
What I do expect, however, is that the absent father of my child in some way shape or form, support his son. Do I think the $25 fee is unfair? Absolutely.
“Then on top of it, whether the parent paying support wants to go through the state or not, you want to take him through the ringer by going through the state and then expect him to also pay an additional 25USD for you to take him through the ringer?”
The ringer? If I hadn’t “taken him through the ringer”, my son would never have received any support from him.
Lastly, the dollar amount that is provided by the court is just that: the amount of money they believe that the parent who is raising the child, alone, should need to help with expenses. By subtracting $25 from that, they are only taking away from the child. That seems a little hypocritical.
I would assume, by the ignorance of your comments, that you are probably one of the parents that are paying child support. Of course you would see it that way.

MARYLAND CHILD SUPPORT RECIPIENT $25 fee
I have a court order that clearly states that I am to receive a certain amount of child support every month (on a monthly basis)The charging of this fee lowers the amount that I am due for the care and support of the minor child as well as amends AND CHANGES THE COURT ORDER That makes this fee unconsttutional as it relates to the seperation of powers. The legistive branch in our goverment can not make new legislation that would change or overrule a Judges order. Furthermore in my court order it clearly states that if the ex fell 30 days behind that her wages would be garnished. The states should have told the feds where to stick it each and every gov has taken a sworn oath of office to uphold the constitution of the US. Those who did not follow this oath need to go. This fee came out of my direct deposit whiched caused me to bounce 4 items in my checking account. Now due to the finacial distruction this has caused xmas is cancelled at our house this year

I sent this letter out in Maryland
I am requesting your help with this matter. Child support Enforcement of Maryland started charging custodial parents a 25 dollar annual fee. Joe Jackins executive director gave a statement to The House Appropriations Committee of Maryland in Feb 2007 laying out his decision to charge the custodial parents this annual fee. He laid out all of the different options the federal government gave him on page thirteen of his statement. He has chosen this option knowing full well his agreement with the custodial parents which is a one- time $25 fee, yet never mentions this in his statement. The Department of Human Resources of Maryland Child Support’s website still to this day advertises their services for this one- time $25 fee. It reads as follows:
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How do I apply for child support services?
A. A. If you receive Temporary Cash Assistance or Medical Assistance, child support services will be provided free of charge. If not, you will need to complete an application for child support services with your local child support enforcement office and pay a one-time fee of $25 when you file your application. To have an application mailed to you or for further information, please contact the local child support enforcement office in your area, or telephone the Child Support Enforcement Administration at 1-800-332-6347.

Mr. Jackins explained to me that this was the easiest way for him to collect the money. Mr. Jackins could have chosen to bill the non- custodial parents which would have upheld the department’s mission statement which says that they will do what is in the best interest of the children. This must be corrected now. The fact that Mr. Jackins withheld this very important information from his statement and the Committee as well as not upholding the Departments mission statement is grounds for termination of employment. The fee that has been charged to the custodial parents must be returned ASAP and stop any future deductions from child support received by custodial parents for the care and support of the children of Maryland.
Thank you for your time,
Scott Frantz
